About me

My story

I began my life in art very young. I used to color Barbie coloring books with my older sister. We would always color them with beautiful brown hues of skin like ours. I would watch my sister draw very fluid figures and see my mother create creations through sewing. In high school I found Art to be my sanctuary. That safe place where the awkwardness of being me could hide in the art room. The Art teacher was the gentlest, kindest woman I’ve ever met and I try to pull strength from her to this very day with my own students.

I went to the University of Georgia for two years and was rejected from the Graphic Artist major. I then traveled to Albuquerque with my Dad to go to the 2-yr Art Center of Albuquerque. After 1 year, my Dad was ready to move on and with the economy of the city being too expensive to handle on my own, I went along for another move.

We settled in Richmond where I worked full time for a printing house for about a year then registered at VCU and graduated 3 years later after losing most of my credits through transferring. At this point, I wanted nothing to do with Art for several years. I did small photography jobs but could not build my business as I wanted or envisioned.

My life with art has definitely been a journey. Through extensive schooling, having children, getting married, being a stay-at-home mom, and now teaching amazing young artists to just explore everything, I have seen much.

There has been nothing quite as sacred to me as returning to a table of materials and just playing, and perhaps stumbling upon something worth keeping, better yet, something worth sharing.
